Frequently Asked Questions
What does the treatment involve?
Our specialist will use a small handpiece to deliver an intense but gentle burst of energy onto targeted areas of the skin.
The newest version of CO2 laser resurfacing (fractionated CO2) uses very short pulsed light energy (known as ultrapulse) or continuous light beams that are delivered in a scanning pattern to remove thin layers of skin with minimal heat damage.
What results can I expect?
The fractional CO2 laser is used to remove acne scarring and other scars, reverse the effects of facial skin aging and sun damage to the skin. The laser will have the effect of skin tightening, filling in lines and wrinkles, improving discoloration of the skin (brown spots), and improving the tone/texture of the skin itself. It also improves the appearance of large pores.
How long does the treatment take
Prior to treatment topical anesthetic cream will be applied for 30-40 minutes. Treatment times may vary and depend on size of the area being treated and can range from 15-60 minutes.
What is the recovery period?
Following laser resurfacing treatment the area will be red and may swell over the next 24-48 hours. You will be instructed to coat the area with Vaseline frequently to prevent infection and drying of the skin. It is vital that your skin does not dry out in the first 5 days following treatment.
The redness and swelling will last for approx. 5 days after the procedure, this is normal and should be expected. After a few days you will see the swelling and redness beginning to subside. By day 5 your skin should be completely regrown – but may appear red for several more weeks. Redness may persist for some weeks after the treatment depending upon the density of the treatment. The downtime for the procedure will vary depending on the density of the treatment. This could be between 5 and 14 days. Please note depending on the depth and extent of the treatment every individual is different and we cannot guarantee the duration of the recovery time.
You will be required to commence antibiotics and antiviral medication for 5 days’ post treatment which will be used in order to prevent infection and cold sore break outs. You must complete the course of antibiotics which you have been prescribed.
